Copenhagen - The Mermaid City

Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark. The city rests on the eastern shore of the island of Zealand and it boasts a population of 1,116,979 inhabitants. The city was founded by Sweyn I Forkbeard around the year 1000AD. Copenhagen established itself as a fishing village until the 12th century when it was fortified and began to expand as a commercial centre. The city withstood a Swedish invasion in the 17th century and German occupation during World War II. Since the end of the war, Copenhagen has continued its rapid expansion and has developed as a bustling, cosmopolitan city.

This historical city boasts an abundance of attractions, and visitors certainly shouldn’t miss a trip to the beautiful Rosenburg Castle, which was built in 1606 and stands amongst lovely gardens. Equally enjoyable is a trip to Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek – a stunning museum housing an eclectic mix of sculpture and painting. Copenhagen is also home to a stunning Botanic Garden near the Nørreport Station and the quiet Norrebro Park, which is home to the beautiful Assistens Cemetery. This cemetery houses the graves of the writer Hans Christian Andersen and the existentialist philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard. During the summer a flea market sets up along the cemetery’s walls.

Copenhagen boasts some stunning beaches, and Charlottenlund Fort and Amager Strandpark are well worth a visit. The city is also famed as a home to artists, musicians and writers; and Copenhagen boasts a vibrant cultural scene. The city is dotted with plenty of small and unusual galleries, as well as unique independent boutiques. The location of Copenhagen also offers visitors the chance to take trips away from the city. The scenic Fælledparken in Østerbro offers a relaxing day-out in lush, green surroundings, while the bustling Swedish city of Malmö is just 30 minutes away.
